Answers for some common questions:

Who may adopt from China?

Chinese Adoption Law specifies the following criteria:

  • Married couples over the age of 30 and under the age of 50
  • In good health
  • No criminal records
  • Financial means to provide for a child

Which children are eligible for adoption?

Two factors determine the children available from China for international adoption:

  • The one-child policy
  • The cultural preference for boys;

Primarily girls ages 0 to 2 years of age are available in orphanages. These children are healthy and are well cared for in either orphanages or foster care.

What are the adoption requirements?

Prospective Parents must be approved by Ontario and China.

Ontario requirements:

  • Completion & approval of a homestudy by an approved social worker
  • Approval of the child prior to adoption completion

Chinese Requirements:

  • Approval to adopt from Ontario
  • Good health & no criminal record
  • Proof of financial viability

How Long Does the Adoption Take?

The adoption process can take over a year to complete. Some key milestones are:
  • Homestudy approval - 1/2 months
  • Chinese approval time – Please check with Open Arms for current approval times
  • 6/8 weeks for permission to travel after child is proposed
