Open Arms to International Adoption works very hard at keeping our fees low. We can keep our costs low by having only one paid staff, using volunteers where appropriate, and avoiding costly lease arrangements. By doing so, prospective families can be assured that the fees they pay cover the cost directly associated with their adoption.

Your payment to Open Arms to International Adoption includes the following:

  • A comprehensive Adoption Planner that provides complete step-by-step instructions and helpful hints on completing the adoption journey.
  • Management of your adoption file
  • Personal guidance through the maze of Canadian and Chinese government  procedures
  • Pre-travel planning seminar to prepare you for the trip to China
  • Post-adoption resources

While Open Arms has control over the fees it charges, there are number of fees and payments to other Canadian agencies and the Chinese authorities that are required that may vary or change. Based on past experience, prospective families can expect to pay an average of $19,000 to $20,000 Canadian to adopt a child from China. This includes the costs for:

  • The homestudy (approximately $2,000)
  • Criminal record checks
  • Translation and authentication of documents
  • Donation to the orphanage (US$3,000)
  • Fees to the Chinese government
  • Air travel to China for two people
  • Accommodation for the two weeks in China
  • Your translator/facilitator in China
  • Travel within China
  • Some meals
  • Sightseeing tours in China
